Dr. Wilkin Chau

Research Focus

My research focuses on method of analyzing functional MRI (fMRI) and magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data. I am interested in all aspects of data processing that affect the results of neuroimging studies. My study areas include MRI spatial normalization, multivariate data analysis and group statistics.

Spatial normalization of imging data is one of critical steps for group analysis and for multi-modality imaging studies. I have developed a procedure to normalize the MEG Synthetic Aperture Magnetometry (SAM) data based on the individual MRIs. This method allows researchers to perform group analysis, and is now being regularly used to analyze SAM data. The method was also successfully used to analyze the fMRI and MEG data in our somatosensory study.

Combining fMRI and MEG data allows researchers to study the temporal and spatial aspects of brain functioning. We have finished a study that uses both fMRI and MEG techniques to investigate the sensory responses. The concordance of the detected active brain regions from both imaging techniques was identified. The results of this study were selected to present orally in an international conference. A second study, using the two imaging techniques, is currently carrying out to examine the cognitive processing of visual attention.

Due to the different characteristics of fMRI and MEG techniques, there are many issues have to be resolved to integrating the measurements from both modalities. I will carry out some multi-modality imaging studies to investigate the relationship between the MEG magnetic fields and the fMRI BOLD signals. My ultimate goal is to develop a statistical analysis method to allow researchers to combining information from both MEG and fMRI data.
