Is There A Concussion Crisis? Traumatic Brain Injury and the Future of Hockey

The latest research about concussions and traumatic brain injury frequently dominates news headlines as concussion-related lawsuits on behalf of professional athletes move forward. Both pro and amateur athletes are becoming increasingly concerned about links between multiple traumatic brain injuries and the deadly degenerative brain disorder, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

Join us for a free public panel discussion where hockey superstars and renowned concussion experts will meet to discuss how professional sports leagues are wrestling with protecting their players from long-term brain damage and what researchers know about the consequences of these conditions.

Is There A Concussion Crisis? Traumatic Brain Injury and the Future of Hockey will be held on March 20, 2018, from 4:35 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. at the Sheraton Centre Hotel.

This event will feature:

• Ms. Hayley Wickenheiser, Canadian hockey star and four-time Olympic gold medalist
• Mr. Ken Dryden, PC, OC, Hockey Hall of Famer, author of Game Change: The Life and Death of Steve Montador, and the Future of Hockey and Baycrest Health Sciences board member
• Dr. Barry D. Jordan, a neurologist at Cornell University, medical advisor to the NFL and one of the first scientists to identify brain changes related to concussions in athletes
• Dr. Brian Levine, a senior scientist at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute leading a longitudinal research study tracking the brain health of retired professional ice hockey players

Wickenheiser will kick off the session with an exclusive talk, Silent suffering and head injury: Why athletes stay quiet and what we can do to help, followed by a panel discussion and Q & A.
